Sharp, dispiriting NYT piece by Steven Kurutz: “The Gen X Career Meltdown,” subtitled, “Just when they should be at their peak, experienced workers in creative fields find that their skills are all but obsolete.“ I remember being struck by Douglas Coupland’s novel, including the form, when my grad school class dug into it in the late 90s. In his intro, Kurutz reminds us that Coupland’s characters had reconciled themselves to “diminishing expectations of material wealth.”
